What is Clubhouse?

One of the newest social media apps, Clubhouse is now on the scene. You may be starting to hear of Clubhouse, but have you joined?

That may be a little more difficult than you’d think, as Clubhouse is invite-only.

When I joined this week, it almost felt like I was listening in on a live podcast in the room I joined about Womxn in Business. You can join into different chats and listen, or join in the audio conversation as well. The audio based app that basically allows you to jump in and out of different chats in real time, follow different subjects and people.

So, what makes Clubhouse so unique?

There are several BIG differences of Clubhouse from other social apps.

  • Not everyone can join. Clubhouse is still currently INVITE ONLY. Making it quite exclusive in feeling, although user base is growing with well over 500,000 users.

  • It is AUDIO ONLY, unlike the majority of other popular social apps

  • What happens on Clubhouse… stays on Clubhouse. It is quite EXCLUSIVE, as you cannot record the audio and the conversations don’t save. Red flag? Might be too early to tell, but content moderation could be a major issue here.

What makes Clubhouse different or interesting for brands and influencers to consider?

It may be too early to tell on this, however so far Clubhouse seems to definitely have some big positives for brands. It is another new platform to find like minded people and share content in a different way (audio only). Some other ways this might entice brands:

  • Valuable platform to share expertise, or become a thought leader as host of chats

  • A focus on quality content in the form of audio, which seems to be attracting many coaching or service based focuses. Rather than such product centric marketing we see on Instagram

  • Focus on real-time, which is an appeal for many to connect with celebrities, influencers, or brands admired in this way. Think podcast + Instagram stories.

How do you get an invite?

Right now, you cannot join Clubhouse without an invite. If you have an iPhone, you can download the app and reserve a username. From the Clubhouse app, it does say plans to expand to the general public will happen soon, but it ‘wants to build community slowly and wants to prepare features that will help it handle larger numbers of people’. Very much a still in beta feel.

“We are building Clubhouse for everyone and working to make it available to the world as quickly as possible”, the app’s home page reads.
